FOUR Air Niugini cadet engineers, including a female, left for studies at Air New Zealand Aviation Institute in Christchurch, New Zealand, on Wednesday.
A statement from Air Niugini said Raphael Purkii, Brian Pessie, Douglas Marita and Arleena Kukari, who was the only woman, were chosen after an intensive recruitment and selection process which saw over 1000 applicants from secondary schools and universities in the country who applied. Chief executive officer Simon Foo challenged them to be good ambassadors of the airline and the country by being aware of the social and disciplinary issues while being away for studies. “Always remember that the airline invests a lot in your studies and we expect nothing less from you. Make good use of the opportunity and be focused in your studies,” Foo said. “Self-discipline gives you the power to stick to your decisions and follow them through, without changing your mind. Life puts challenges and problems on the path to success and achievement, and in order to rise above them, you have to act with perseverance and persistence, and this of course, requires self-discipline.” Pessie, who spoke on behalf of the cadets, thanked Air Niugini for the opportunity and said they would do their best for the airline and the country. Air Niugini revived its aircraft maintenance engineer cadet scheme four years ago. It’s an intensive recruitment and selection process considers those within the age of 18-25 with a minimum of Grade 12 education with an A or B passes in Physics, Applied Maths, Maths A, Applied English and or PETT certification. The scheme is a four-year programme and aims to develop young engineers into becoming licensed engineers by utilising overseas training with Air New Zealand. The successful candidates will spend four years training with Air New Zealand’s Aviation Institute with final outcome being European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) basic license. Currently, Air Niugini has 39 cadets, including six women, training in New Zealand.
