A total of 5, 628 students have been given the opportunity to continue their education in 2015 at our major Universities in PNG. This is out of the 19,828 Grade 12 students who sat for the Grade 12 Examinations in 2014. This is an increase from 4,614 students last year. Although it may seem a slight increase only, the Minister for Higher Education, Research Science and Technology, Malakai TABAR is happy to get the backing of Government and the National Executive Council who have prioritized on ensuring that our youths are catered for after Grade 12. This has also been reflected in the achievements over the past years, which include the accreditation of new higher and Technical Education institutions like the IBS and the Enga Nursing College. The Department of Higher Education has been allocated a total of K197.5M, increasing Government scholarships/HECAS for selected students who do very well. Focus now for the Department is to increase access to Tertiary Education and ensuring that the standard of learning is improved this year.
