A PRESTIGIOUS scholarship was launched early this month for post-graduates of the University of Papua New Guinea school of medicine and health sciences.
The Melbourne University-offered scholarship is being sponsored by one of Papua New Guinea’s long-time beneficiaries of its goodwill – International SOS, and it is for doctors and dentists. Currently, a leading medical and travel security services company, International SOS has worked in this country for 20 years, managing the health and safety of organisations, but particularly international operations. and deliver health care to local communities. A large percentage of its workforce are medical professionals, including full-time physicians. According to information received by this newspaper, the launch took place on December 4 in Canberra. Among those that attended the event was a small number of Papua New Guineans, including PNG’s High Commissioner to Australia Charles Lepani who spoke on behalf of the Government and one of PNG’s senior gynaecologists and former executive dean of UPNG school of medicine and health sciences Dr Mathias Sapuri. Applications are now open for interested people and close on February 28, 2014. The maximum scholarship amount awarded will be up to $30,000 per annum for a maximum of 3.5 years . There will be one successful applicant in 2014 and it will be for a high-level outstanding graduate with academic leadership potential to undertake research in global health-relevant fields of basic science, social sciences, clinical sciences or public health, at the Nossal Institute for Global Health within the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health or in a Department of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, University of Melbourne. To be known as Nossal Global Health Scholars Papua New Guinea PhD Program, the scholarship is in honour of Sir Gustav Nossal, and is offered by the Nossal Institute for Global Health at the University of Melbourne. The institute is named in honour of Professor Emeritus Sir Gustav Nossal, AC CBE, FAA FRS, a world-renowned scientist and immunologist, Australian of the Year 2000, an inspirational leader, who continues to influence the scientific affairs of Australia and the world through his advocacy for science and work with the World Health Organisation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and other agencies.
