MORE than 100 students at a school in West Sepik have been sent home after being allegedly involved in cult practices, police say.
Aitape police station officer Kelly Vavena told PNG newspapter The National that the students who attended the St Ignatius Secondary School were sent home last week. They have been told to return to school with their parents or guardians when the board of governors’ disciplinary committee next sits. The board suspended the students after they were identified as members of the Faul Pes Congregation (FPC), a group which reportedly practised cult activities, which oppose school rules. However Vavena said it would have been better if the board had allowed the police to investigate the allegations before sending the students home. Vavena said the students and parents staged a protest on Wednesday in front of the Aitape-Lumi district administration building. “The situation is tense and we are there to ensure it does not turn out to be violent,” he said. Meanwhile, a Grade 12 student said after their names were read out, students were given only 30 minutes to pack their belongings and leave the school premises. Parent Christina Akove said the suspension would affect the children’s education. St Ignatius Secondary School is run by the Catholic church. The National / PNGEN
