THE Government’s free education policy must go with improved pay and work conditions for teachers if quality education is to be provided, a principal says.
John Onga, the principal of Goroka Secondary School in Eastern Highlands, said during the Grade 12 graduation last Friday that if quality education was to be achieved, serious consideration must be given to improve the pay and work conditions of teachers. Onga said there was an influx of students as a result if the free education policy and it places a lot of strain on teachers. “We need more classrooms, teachers’ houses, science labs and library buildings to accommodate the influx,” he said. He said the school lost two teachers this year after suffering asthma and high blood pressure because of the dusty classrooms and extra work load. “The Government is putting a lot of burden on teachers through the free education policy,” he said. Goroka MP Bire Kimisopa encouraged students to aim high and have self-confidence. He called on the students to set goals at an early stage and work hard towards achieving them. Kimisopa assured the school of his support to ensure it remains one of the biggest secondary schools in the province. PNG Education News/ The National Comments are closed.
