EDUCATION has been allocated K1.5 billion in the 2014 National Budget as one of Government’s five priority sectors for development.
The funding includes K358.3 million in donor grants and loans. The 2014 allocation for education is an increase of K160 million from the 2013 Budget appropriation levels. This would see the Department of Education receiving K1,082 million as part of the Government’s commitment to the sector. “Our key policy is tuition fee-free education fromelementary level to National High School, costing K605 million with a further K43 million in trust,” Treasurer Don Polye said. “Students from over 18,000 schools in the country will benefit from this policy. “The department delivers flexible open distant education which supports students from Grades 8-10 to complete their studies away from the classroom, special education and accreditation of high quality tertiary and vocational institutions.” Polye gave a break-up of funding for several projects within the sector which includes:
